Japan will raise visa fees
Recently, Japan’s Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu announced that Japan will raise visa fees on July 1, 2026. This the first time Japan has revised visa fees since 1978.
A single-entry visas will increase from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000 and multiple-entry visas will increase from ¥6,000 to ¥30,000. Tourism, business, conferences, and study fall under shot-term visas.
Inbound visitors to Japan increased to over 42 million at the end of 2025. This is 10 million more than visitors in 2019. The increased visa fee decision was made to reflect inflation and changes in exchange rates.
Currently these countries are exempt from a visa to visa Japan including passport holders from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Schengen countries, and Mexico. This is for stays of up to 90 days.
Raising its visa fees will put it on par with Western countries such as at the UK which charges £135 The additional revenue is excepted to help with administrative costs as well as helping to tackle over tourism.
