This years Autumn Foliage in Japan will Be Delayed

A report from Japan’s Meteorological Corporation (JMC) from September 3, 2024 states that this year’s autumn/fall foliage will delayed by 11 days compared to past years. Japan’s fall foliage is split between yellow and red. Yellow is due to the ginkgo trees, and red is from Japanese maple leaves.

This delay is because Japan recorded one of its hottest summers ever. This affects the timing of fall colors, especially, red foliage which requires colder nights.

Northern Japan will see red fall foliage in early November, and Southern Japan will see red fall foliage in early December.

Below is JMC’s map for the yellow and red autumn forecast.

Fall foliage or kouyou in Japanese is a beautiful and popular time to visit Japan. The tradition of having outings to appreciate fall’s colors is called momojigari and dates back to the 8th century during the Heian period.

What does this fall foliage delay mean for travelers?

If you haven’t purchased your flight yet, you’ll want to aim to arrive in mid-late November to see yellow foliage, and late November- early December to see a mix or more of the red foliage. This will also depend on where you’re planning to visit. If you’ve already purchased flights, don't worry. You can shift your travel a bit North to see fall colors.

If all your plans are set you can still enjoy the yellow foliage. You’ll enjoy what Japan has in the fall including hot springs, seasonal foods, and autumn festivals.
